Tourism Development in Mekong River Delta Associated with Specific Cultural Values

“Specific tourist products of the Mekong Delta will be in association with experience activities of the water land and the unique cultural values, especially Don Ca Tai Tu”. Pham Trung Luong- vice president of Institute of Tourism Research and Development said at the meeting of project “Building the unique tourism product of Mekong Delta” had occurred recently. This idea received consensus of many experts.

The essence of culture, history of local people is associated with heritage “Don Ca Tai Tu” and traditional folk festivals are unique features; cultural space of water land, life on the famous floating market has become the dominant factor that make the tourism attraction of Mekong River Delta.

Although Mekong River Delta has the potential and big advantage for tourism development but it is small and not a common product.

According to Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ho Anh Tuan: In order to develop tourism in the Mekong River Delta with its potential and advantages at regional level, we must have a specific plan of action, with appropriate planning, task assignment details of central agencies and local, tourism associations, ensure force made on the basis of overall coordination.

This project will support for the construction of two particular tourism products: national level and regional level.
Specific tourist products need to be developed on basis of national level tourism resources, for example: the Mekong Delta as abundant water landscape. In “River World”, typical values should focus on exploiting to develop specific tourism products including: Landscape value, daily life and livelihood of people in Delta Mekong; The value of wetland ecosystem in the Mekong River Delta and value of cultural and spiritual traditions.

On the basis of the national level, specific tourist products include: Visit and experience community life are associated with the river landscape values and local culture; Ecotourism: study and experience the value of biodiversity, landscape and local culture through the typical habitat of wetland ecosystem in the Mekong River Delta; Experience the typical cultural values of Mekong Delta especially “Don Ca Tai Tu”- Intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

The system of tourism products at regional level include: Traveling and resort in Phu Quoc; Sightseeing and tours in Ha Tien; Product group and travel experience Vam Co River; Tours in Ho Chi Minh city

According to representatives of Institute of Tourism Research and Development, to develop this project effectively, we need to take into account many of the associated problems such as connection of infrastructure; Training of human resources in accordance with specific product of tourism in Mekong River Delta; Promotion process; Environment protection; Plans to cope with climate change.

  1. There are many intagible cultural heritage of humanity should be preserved in Vietnam such as Ca Tru, Cheo singing, Don Ca Tai Tu,.. A country with thosands year of culture will have so many things to do and see. Will be there in January, next year.
